60 Day Ride & Return Period

The Privateer E161 E-MTB has been built to serve as the ultimate training tool for EDR (Enduro World Cup) riders. At Privateer, we recognised the need for riders to spend more time on their bikes, mainly focusing on increasing the time spent descending.

The E161 was specifically designed to address this demand, allowing riders to maximise their time on the trail, between races when they might be tired or during the winter months when the days are shorter. They can train consistently day after day with assistance from the integrated Shimano EP801 motor system and 630Wh Shimano battery.

Sorted Suspension

We've taken great care in developing the suspension kinematics of the Privateer E161 to ensure familiar handling and to get the most out of the added motor assistance. We've made changes to the kinematics to improve the small bump sensitivity, ensuring that the bike is responsive to even the smallest irregularities on the trail and providing a smooth and comfortable ride. Additionally, we have increased the progression of the suspension, which helps resist bottom-outs and offers a more responsive feel, compensating for the increased weight of the motor and battery.

Rock dropping

Anti-rise has been increased, enhancing stability during braking and effectively managing load transfer resulting in improved control and confidence when tackling challenging descents. We also opted for lower antisquat (~110% at sag) to counteract pedal bobbing, benefiting from the increased power of the E-bike and maintaining excellent traction during climbs while under power.

Finely tuned anti-squat values provide consistent pedaling support and traction across the entire gear range. The Privateer E161 delivers a predictable and balanced ride, with a suspension platform designed to amplify the advantages of the Shimano EP8 assistance while maintaining control, stability, and grip in varying trail conditions.

Geometry

Working with our sponsored riders, our engineers worked hard to bring the same level of confidence and responsiveness we all know and love from the 161 over to the Privateer E161. For the E161, we've slackened the seat angle to 78.7 degrees to place the rider over the rear wheel to get the traction down when tackling loose, steep climbs where the torque from the Shimano EP8 really comes into its own while retaining a 64-degree head angle that keeps the front wheel nicely planted for immense levels of grip.

The Privateer E161's forward-thinking geometry includes size specific chainstay lengths, which increase from 446mm in the P1-P2 sizes to 456mm on the P3 and 466mm on the P4. This increase in chainstay length is proportional to the increase in reach and grows as we size up. By keeping the front centre to the rear centre weight bias ratio as close as possible, we can ensure that each size of Privateer E161 shares the same agile handling and confidence-inspiring stability so all sizes of riders can enjoy a high-performance riding experience.

Shimano EP801

The Shimano EP801 motor system provides 85Nm of torque and can be fine-tuned to meet the rider's needs through the companion application. The compact size of the EP801 allowed our team to retain the handling characteristics of the Privateer 161 while adding uphill assistance for self-shuttle service. 3 modes; Eco, Trail and Boost, are easily selectable through the on-bar control, and a 4th 'Walk' mode gives you a helping hand if you ever find yourself in a hike-a-bike situation. Powering the motor is an integrated 630wh Shimano battery, providing plenty of juice for training or thrashing.

One-Piece Rocker

The Privateer E161 uses a forged one-piece rocker to ensure strength, reliability and accurate bearing alignment. We choose to forge our rocker as it provides the grain structure of the alloy to remain intact, thus increasing the overall strength. One-piece construction also eliminates the need for welding and heat treating, which improves bearing alignment, promoting long life and ease of maintenance.

Clean Cable Routing

All Privateer bikes are designed to ensure ease of service and minimise faff. On our non-assisted bike, we always route cables and hoses externally for ease of access. With the Privateer E161, we're able to move the cables internally while retaining ease of serviceability through the large alloy battery cover.

All cables are fastened securely in the frame to prevent unwanted rub or rattle. The convenience of external routing with the clean lines of external routing.

Anodised Bashguard

We've equipped the Privateer E161 with a specially designed bashguard to ensure that riders can fully enjoy their ride without worrying about damaging the Shimano EP801 motor system. Riding to the limits inevitably means accidents can happen. A flicked rock or an imperfect landing can easily ruin a ride, but with our custom 4mm hard-anodized bash guard, you can ride with confidence, knowing that your bike won't suffer when you push the limits.

Alloy Not Plastic

Just as we don't want to spend unnecessary time maintaining our bikes, we also don't want our bikes to break. By protecting key components and using alloy rather than plastic, we're confident that riders can really rally their E161 and not worry about the odd rock strike or impact. Rather than using plastic, we used durable alloy for both the bash guard that protects the Shimano EP801 motor and for the cover that shields the 630Wh Shimano battery in the downtube.

Hayes Logo

The perfectly named Hayes Dominion A4 offers outstanding reliability and impressive performance, with a light action feel and incredible adjustability. We've been offering the powerful 4-piston Dominion on our bikes for a while now, and they have become a firm favourite of ours for their excellent modulation, comfortable lever, and dialed reach adjustment. To make the most of the power on offer, we've fitted the E161 with 203mm front and rear rotors, ensuring consistent, powerful braking with zero fade, even on the longest Alpine descents.

Maxxis Logo

Maxxis Assegai / DHRII tyres - The Privateer E161 is for riding hard, all the time, non-stop, and we've only fitted parts that we would be happy riding on ourselves, and this couldn't be any more evident than with our tyre choice. The purposeful Maxxis Assegai and DHRII combo offer all-around great performance across a multitude of terrain types and conditions, but more importantly, we've gone for MaxxGrip, 3CG/TR/DH variants limiting the chance of pinch flats when charging hard and ensuring your ride won't be dispersed with puncture breaks.

FAQ's

Comes with charger model EC-E8004-6 with UK compatible plug. If a plug adaptor is required in your country, please make sure you use something rated for 1.2kW or above.

Can I remove the battery?
Yes, to remove the battery use a 4mm allen key and turn the locking mechanism a 1/4 turn which will release it.

Do I have to remove the battery to charge it?
No, you can charge the battery in the bike.

How do I use walk mode?
To use walk mode, press down on the mode controller until you see that the assist is turned off. Then press down and hold for Walk mode to activate.

What modes are there?

The Privateer E161 uses the latest Shimano EP801 drive-unit featuring 3 assist modes plus a handy 'Walk' mode. 'Eco' mode offers the lowest level of assistance and will provide you with the most range. 'Trail' mode is a mid-level power and torque mode, while 'Boost' provides maximum acceleration and torque. All modes are also customisable from within the Shimano E-Tube application.

Can I run a 29” rear wheel?
No, the Privateer E161 is designed as a mullet and requires a 27.5in wheel to ensure correct handling and performance.

Will it fit a water bottle?
Yes, approx 500ml bottle on all sizes.

Is the E161 coil compatible?
The E161 could work with a coil, but we have worked closely with Fox on the X2 shock and believe it offers the best performance for this bike.

Can I change the chainring size?

You must not change the chainring size of the E161, doing so could lead to damage and will void warranty.
